Ethical With-profits Fund

Healthy Investment’s Ethical With-profits Fund aims to provide members with steady growth through a single managed fund over the medium to long term, whilst smoothing out the fluctuations in investment markets.

It offers investors a way to invest and save for their future in an ethical and cautious With-profits Fund which allows them to invest in a mix of different assets including government and company bonds, UK and global shares, commercial property and cash deposits, which might be difficult to achieve as a direct individual investor.

We are, and have been throughout our long history, committed to never investing directly in alcohol, arms, and tobacco industries and gambling and pornography providers. Where we use collective investments to gain exposure to a market or market index that it would be difficult to achieve through direct investments, we ensure that no more than 0.25% of the With-profits Fund is invested in any one of these industries.

There are no investments in firms exclusively mining coal, manufacturing controversial weapons and regular offenders of the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact.

We seek to invest in companies that demonstrate good environmental, social and governance standards.

Diversification reduces risk by allocating investments across various financial assets, and industries. The objective of a diversified portfolio is to optimise returns by investing in different industry sectors, each of which react differently to the same market event.

Although it doesn’t guarantee against loss, diversification is an important element of reaching long term financial goals whilst managing the level of risk.

Balancing a portfolio is quite complicated and potentially more expensive if arranged by direct individual investment and without expert analysis may come with lower rewards.

Different assets such as bonds and shares don’t usually react in the same way to adverse events. A combination of both reduces the sensitivity of a portfolio to market swings because they often move in opposite directions. So by diversifying, adverse movements in one may be offset by positive results in another.

Diversification by location may also be beneficial. Market volatility in USA may not affect investments in the UK and Europe so investing across different locations may minimise and offset the risks of all investments being at home.

Our appointed investment managers ensure that the components of the With-profits Fund are sufficiently diversified to represent a cautious approach to investing our members’ savings and investments.

Fund Objectives

Healthy Investment’s All Share Unit-linked Life Fund aims to provide growth by tracking the performance of the UK All-share index.

It meets the government benchmark for stakeholder Child Trust Funds and enables Child Trust Fund holders over the age of 18 to remain invested in the same fund.

The FTSE All Share index is made up of over 600 of the UKs top companies across a wide range of industries.

When the Child Trust Fund was invested with Healthy Investment the initial and any subsequent investments will have purchased a number of units in the fund. Your statement will show how many units you have.

The price of a unit rises and falls with the value of the shares invested in. The unit price as at 05/01/2024 is £1.715.

Fund Objectives

The purpose of the fund is to provide capital growth over the longer term. Healthy Investment's Ethical Unit-linked Life Fund for Child Trust Funds and continuation ISAs invests primarily (between 80 and 90%) in a mix of UK and global equities, with additional investments in government and corporate bonds, alternative investments, including real estate investment trusts and listed infrastructure projects and cash deposits.

The fund managers take an ethical approach to investing and aim to explicitly incorporate social, governance and environmental considerations into their investment strategy and stock selection decisions.

The Healthy Investment Ethical Unit-Linked Life Fund does not invest your child’s money in companies that cause harm. There are no investments in companies involved solely in coal mining, manufacturers of controversial weapons and companies who consistently fail to maintain the 10 principles of the United Nations Global Compact.

When the assets of Coventry Assurance were transferred to Healthy Investment in 2011 they were put into a ring fenced fund to ensure that the members of Coventry Assurance benefited from the investment growth.

The fund aims to provide members with steady growth through a low risk, managed fund over a medium to long term, whilst smoothing out the fluctuations in investment markets.

It offered investors a way to invest and save for their future in an ethical and cautious With-profits Fund which allowed them to invest in a mix of different assets which might be difficult to achieve as a direct individual investor.

The Coventry Ring Fenced Fund has never invested directly in companies in certain industries and those whose activities do not accord with our members’ personal values. Examples are the tobacco, armaments, alcohol and fur manufacturing industries, gambling and pornography providers and companies that manufacture products or ingredients that have been tested on animals.

Historically The Coventry Assurance Ring Fenced With-profits Fund has invested in a mix of different investment assets including UK and global stocks and shares, fixed interest government and corporate bonds, commercial property and cash deposits.

As members’ endowments have matured the fund is reducing in size and in order to minimise risk and take advantage of rising interest rates the fund now invests solely in fixed interest bonds and cash deposits.

In order to maximise the potential return of cash deposits we use a cash fund that places deposits with a wide range of banks and invests in short dated fixed interest bonds issued by banks, financial institutions and governments.
